George's Creek Coal Basin
The George's Creek Basin lies between Big Savage Mountain on the west and Dan's Mountain
on the east and is about 21 miles long by five miles wide. The northern boundary is the
Pennsylvania being called the Wellersburg Basin. The Savage River forms the boundary line
between the George's Creek Basin and the Upper Potomac Basin which lies to the south along
the same synclinal axis. The Allegany/Garrett County boundary passes diagonally across the
basin, with about three fourths of the basin lying in Allegany County. Most of the post coal
mining production in Maryland took place in this basin.
