GIS Data
Project staff is currently georeferencing the scanned mine map images and digitizing the boundaries
of the underground mines. The shapefiles, when completed, will be available for download and viewing
here on the project site. If you wish to access the shapefiles at the present time, please contact the Maryland Bureau of Mines.
To date, over 200 mine maps have been georeferenced and digitized. The goal is to provide a
system of easy access to the actual maps for use in decision making and other issues.
The Data
The underground mining data will be available in ESRI shapefile format. The data is divided up by
the coal basin. The map below shows the five coal basins in Western Maryland. Most of the
digizing has occurred in the George's Creek Basin. Click on the outline for the George's Creek basin
below to see a sample of the data and a sample download page where you will be able to obtain the
shapefiles. The Mapping Project Specialist is currently preparing a PDF map book that will contain
maps of the locations of mines in Allegany and Garrett counties. They will be available in letter
size paper so you may print out the maps.
