Lower Youghiogheny Coal Basin
The Lower Youghiogheny Coal basin is in the upper left corner of Garrett. The basin is approximately
11 miles long and 6 miles wide at its widest point. Mining activity in this basin has been relatively
minimal compared to other coal basins in the state.

In 2004-2005 mine boundaries were delineated on USGS 1:24,000-scale Topographic Maps and then digitized by the Maryland Bureau of Mines, Frostburg, MD office. In cooperation with Frostburg State University, the Maryland Bureau of Mines is updating and validating this GIS coverage. |
