Dr. John J. Rutledge
Chief Mining Engineer, Maryland Bureau of Mines
In Dr. John Rutledge's 33 year career in the mining industry ending as the Chief Mining Engineer
for the Maryland Bureau of Mines, he managed to collect vast amounts of mine maps and documents
related to the mining industry. Although the collection in part has been damaged by floods and
fires throughout the years, the maps, photographs, and other documents that are available still
capture a piece of time and history of the Allegheny Mountains of Western Maryland.
The Maryland Bureau of Mines has generously donated to the Lewis J. Ort Library this collection of maps
and documents of which most can be dated to the pre 1950's. Thanks to the Maryland Bureau of
Mines and its first Chief J.J. Rutledge the maps in this collection will be permanently cataloged,
digitized and stored at the Ort Library for preservation.
