Upper Potomac Coal Basin
From top to bottom the basin is almost 30 miles long and about 3 miles wide. The North Branch of the
Potomac River borders the east side of the basin separating it from West Virginia. This basin is the
largest contiguous reserve of coal in Maryland.

In 2004-2005 mine boundaries were delineated on USGS 1:24,000-scale Topographic Maps and then digitized by the Maryland Bureau of Mines, Frostburg, MD office. In cooperation with Frostburg State University, the Maryland Bureau of Mines is updating and validating this GIS coverage. |
