Luigi Verdi, a visiting professor of music from Italy, will present a lecture at Frostburg State University on the opera favorite, "Madam Butterfly," by Puccini. The talk will be Thursday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in room 216 of the FSU Performing Arts Center.
Professor Verdi will describe how Puccini was an unrivalled master in combining passion, sensuality, tenderness, pathos and despair. Puccini has a highly developed sense of the relationship between words and music. But in "Madam Butterfly" the relationship is raised above the constraints of pure realism.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Verdi, who is teaching at FSU this spring, has diplomas in Choral Music and Conducting, Band Instrumentation, Composition and Orchestra Conducting. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Bologna. He is an active composer, musicologist and orchestra conductor. He teaches Harmony, Counterpoint, Fugue, and Composition at the Music Conservatory in Adria and is the Artistic Counselor at the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna.
