Frostburg State University has appointed veteran administrator Dr. Danny Arnold as its new Dean of the College of Business. Arnold comes to FSU after nine years as Dean and Professor of Marketing at New Mexico State University.
Arnold's primary goal will be to help guide the College of Business through the final years of accreditation by AASCB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In Arnold's previous position at New Mexico State, he led the school through the reaccreditation process incorporating AASCB's dramatically changed standards.
About 450 schools around the world have been accredited by AASCB, Arnold says. "They accredit excellence, not minimum standards."
Arnold brings to FSU a broad-based background in all areas of business, with degrees in accounting, finance and marketing, with minors in economics and management as well. He as also taught and published in all of those areas.
"I covered the waterfront," Arnold says.
Arnold, who says he enjoys the small-school environment, says he was attracted to FSU by its commitment to achieving accreditation, its strong president and provost and the quality of life afforded by Western Maryland. "We loved the desert (in Las Cruces, N.M.), but we're looking forward to four distinct seasons," he says.
FSU's College of Business has already completed part of the five-year accreditation process, most recently under Interim Dean Connie Groer, who will return to her position as Associate Dean. Arnold, who started work July 1, will spend the next couple of months evaluating faculty credentials and curriculum in light of AASCB's standards and plan any additional changes.
Arnold also plans to reach out to the local business and governmental community, as well as College of Business alumni. He is considering increasing the size of the CoB's Advisory Council.
"In doing all these things, we have to do it and still remain student-focused," Arnold says. "Without learning, there's no reason to have walls here, to have buidings here, to have people here."
FSU has also named Dr. Joseph Hoffman as Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, filling the position of Dean Fred Yaffe, who accepted a position at University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif. Filling Hoffman's position of Associate Dean will be Dr. Cindy Herzog, currently chair of the FSU Department of Psychology.
