Frostburg State University President Catherine R. Gira recently invited Ed Mallory, former TV actor and director, to serve as an “artist-in-residence” for FSU’s Department of Mass Communication.
A native of Cumberland, Mallory played Dr. Bill Horton on the popular NBC daytime drama "Days of our Lives" from 1966 to 1980 and later directed several dramas including "Generations," "All My Children" and "The Young and the Restless." Throughout his career in Hollywood, he made appearances in feature films such as "Diamond Head" with Charlton Heston and "Birdman of Alcatraz" with Burt Lancaster and also guest starred on several classic TV shows including "Bewitched," "The Munsters," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Wagon Train," "McHale’s Navy" and "Perry Mason." He later worked on biographies and documentaries for A&E Network and The History Channel.
Now a resident of Swanton, Mallory previously served as an adjunct professor at FSU, teaching such classes as "Writing for Electronic Media" and acted as executive producer of the documentary "Biographies: The Story of J. Glenn Beall, Jr.," which was shot by FSU Mass Communication students.
President Gira noted that Mallory’s experience "should prove to be of great benefit to FSU students."
"It's pay back time for me. I intend to work hard at imparting what I have learned in a long career to my future students," says Mallory.
In his new position, Mallory plans to shoot a new documentary on former U.S. Attorney for Maryland George Beall and his involvement in the resignation and conviction of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. Mallory has also proposed an "Acting for the Camera" seminar for FSU students and a soap opera to be broadcast on FSU’s cable station, TV 3, produced, directed, written and acted by FSU students.
