Frostburg State University 2004-2005 International Film Series begins with the French film "Demonlover" on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Lane University Center Atkinson Room 201. The series is sponsored by FSU Center Stage.
"Demonlover" is Olivier Assayas' breathtaking vision of our modern global world. On the surface, the film follows Diane (Connie Nielsen), a corporate mole who in trying to undermine a deal between two multinational conglomerates, uncovers a link between one of the companies and an interactive torture Web site known as "The Hellfire Club." However, she is challenged every step of the way by her amoral colleague (Charles Berling), an antagonistic and mysterious assistant (Chloe Sevigny) and an outspoken, pot-smoking American executive (Gina Gershon). The film captures a culture spiraling out of control in which reality is posited as a video game and where every twist escalates the film to a new level.
This film is presented as part of the Tournees program, made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture.
Other films scheduled for this semester include: "Uncovered: The War on Iraq," Oct. 12; "Dirty Pretty Things," Nov. 16; and "La Belle et Le Bete" ("Beauty and the Beast"), Dec. 7. All film showings are free and open to the public. For information, contact the Lane University Center Information Desk at 301-687-4411.
