Back by popular demand, Gregory Popovich, the world-famous Russian juggler, will return to Western Maryland with his diverse collection of stray cats and dogs. His delightfully bizarre show “Comedy and Pet Theatre” comes to Beall High School in Frostburg as a part of Frostburg Cultural Event Series’ Family Fun Series, sponsored by Smiley’s FunZone & Pizzeria. Shows will be held on Friday, March 11, at 6 and 8 p.m.
“Sunset Magazine” heralded its “Reigning cats and dogs,” after the 1999 Las Vegas debut of “Comedy & Pet Theatre.” Popovich, a former member of the Moscow Circus and Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey, adopted his feline and canine cast entirely from animal shelters. Featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Comedy & Pet Theatre” is half animal tricks, and half juggling, acrobatics and just plain clowning around.
“I don’t train the animals,“ says Popovich, an advocate of adopting pets from animal shelters. “I analyze them. They trust me, and we play, and then they find a trick or two that they like to do. That’s what they do on stage.”
“People Weekly” exclaims, “With a band of troupers saved from the pound, Gregory Popovich’s Vegas act is pure theatrical catnip.”
This show is presented in partnership with the Downtown Cumberland Holiday Inn and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the capital campaign of the Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation’s goal to build a new Animal Shelter in Allegany County.
