Bane McCracken, West Virginia state supervisor of health and physical education, will speak at Frostburg State University on Monday, April 18, as the 2005 Lillian Wellner Scholar. McCracken's lecture will be from 10 a.m. to noon in the Cordts Physical Education Center Main Area and is free and open to the public.
McCracken, one of the pioneers of the “new physical education” movement, is the author of “It’s Not Just Gym Anymore: Teaching Secondary Students to be Physically Active for Life.” He was honored as the National Association for Sport and Physical Education National Physical Education Teacher of the Year for 1997.
The Wellner Scholar program was created from an endowment to allow FSU’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation to host a series of lectures by nationally acclaimed scholars. It was named for the late Lillian Wellner, a former Frostburg State registrar and physical education instructor.
