Frostburg State University's Cultural Events Series will present the award-winning Japanese music ensemble Nitta Oyako in a free educational performance on Wednesday, May 4, at 3 p.m. in the FSU Performing Arts Center Pealer Recital Hall.
Consisting of son Masahiro and father Hiroshi, Nitta Oyako has performed extensively throughout Japan and other parts of Asia. The performance comprises a range of music from traditional Japanese folk tunes (Minyo), original tunes based on tradition, a few pop music covers and a bit of jazz. Included will be the performance of the tsugaru shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, for which Masahiro has won the National Tsugaru Shamisen Competition.
The Nitta Oyako U.S. Tour 2005 has been made possible, in part, by The Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts Japan program; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal agency in cooperation with the U.S./Japan Cultural Trade Network’s project of Arts Midwest.
