The Frostburg State University Chamber Choir presents its Spring Choral Concert, entitled “The Magical and Mystical,” on Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 300 East Oldtown Road, Cumberland, and Sunday, April 24, at 4 p.m. at the Bedford United Methodist Church, Bedford, Pa. The concerts are free and open to the public.
The Chamber Choir is under the direction of Dr. Karen Soderberg-Sarnaker with Betty Jane Phillips, accompanist.
The concert will include “Two Kyries” from the “Winds of Heaven” by the Australian composer Sarah Hopkins. The music reflects the ideas and elements from several spiritual philosophies and utilizes harmonic overtone singing, which produces a magical sound.
The second part of the concert consists of three madrigals: “The Nymphs to the Shepherds" and "Awake, My Hearts” by Ruth Watson Henderson of Canada and “I Love My Love,” arranged by Philip Lawson of England.
Part three features Stephen Leek’s “Songs of Passage,” expressing environmental sounds of Australia and a variety of people of different ages and different backgrounds.
The Chamber Choir will conclude its performance with two vocal jazz arrangements, “For All We Know,” arranged by David Cross, and James Taylor’s “And So it Goes”; two spirituals, “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord,” arranged by Undine S. Moore, and “Oh Freedom,” arranged by Robert I. Hughes; and the gospel arrangement of “True Light” by Keith Hampton, featuring tenor Joshua Ruppenkamp of Cumberland as the soloist.
