“Dollars and $ense” is the theme of this summer’s Upward Bound program at Frostburg State University.
Financial security and financial responsibility have become much more of a challenge in today’s society, in light of recent news about Social Security and retirement plans. Upward Bound wants to challenge its students to think about these issues and their potential impact on them.
UB hopes to help raise the Financial IQs. One of the tools that may help students prepare for their futures is to understand the workings of the stock market. This year, UB students are engaged in playing a modified Stock Market Game. Working in small groups, students are investing an imaginary $10,000 in three stocks. They are following and charting the progress of these stocks daily for five weeks using the New York Stock Exchange. At the end of the five weeks, students will see which group has had the most success with its investments.
Advising the students are UB instructor Dan Whetzel and Greg MaBee an investment representative with EdwardJones® in Frostburg.
