Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series Jazz Club sponsored by Kauffman Music, presents drummer, vocalist, composer/arranger T.S. Monk on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in FSU’s Manicur Assembly Hall.
Monk has received the New York Jazz Award’s Recording of the Year and Downbeat’s Reader’s Poll Award. He is known for his hard-swinging jazz compositions and surrounds himself with superb musicianship that has spanned a spectrum of styles from R&B to traditional jazz. Critics and the public lauded T. S. Monk as his father's true musical heir, as a bandleader and a performer. One of the most unique groups on the circuit, the T. S. Monk Sextet's cohesive and driving style has been heard at the JVC Jazz at the Bowl festival, Sun Valley Center, Lied Center for the Performing Arts, Kennedy Center Jazz Series Lincoln Center and many of the legendary jazz clubs.
T. S. Monk will lead an educational jazz session beginning at 3:30 p.m. in FSU’s Manicur Assembly Hall. He will discuss his style of jazz music along with performance and composition technique. This session is free and open to the public.
This performance is sponsored by Tri-State Hand and Occupational Therapy and is supported in part by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, and funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and in part by the Allegany Arts Council. The tour of T.S. Monk is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.
