Frostburg State University professor Dr. Frederick Senese will be speaking about traditional medicine in Appalachia and Madagascar before the Western Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society and the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Ponderosa restaurant in LaVale. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the talk will begin at 7:15 p.m.
Senese, an associate professor of chemistry at FSU, won a 2004 Science and Technology Web Award for his web site “General Chemistry Online,” from Scientific American.com His site covers the basics and beyond in chemistry. Senese has been honored several times for his efforts in chemistry and in 2000 was profiled in “Chemistry,” the quarterly publication of the American Chemical Society.
Several projects will be available to undergraduate biology and chemistry students at FSU beginning in spring 2006 on recent research Dr. Senese and other FSU faculty advisors have been doing. Recent research the similar skin healing qualities found in two species of Nepenthes plants that do not occur anywhere else in the world except in Madagascar and in local black walnut trees.
