Frostburg State University sophomore Shavonne Shorter, of Crownsville, Md., a communications major and a leadership studies minor, is the third student to receive the Dr. Harold and Geraldine Delaney Leadership Award at FSU, a program designed to promote the development of student leaders.
Shorter is a member of the University Systems of Maryland Student Council, a resident assistant, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, SGA Liaison and a School Spirit Committee member. She has been on the FSU Dean’s List, has received the NAACP On the Ball Freshmen award and was senator of the year in spring 2005.
Delaney award recipients must demonstrate involvement in student life at FSU, understand leadership and its role in an organization and have an appreciation of the importance of volunteer experiences and co-curricular involvement. The award was named in memory of the late Dr. Harold Delaney, who served as interim president at FSU in 1991, and his wife, Geraldine, who died tragically in 1994.
The purpose of the Dr. Harold and Geraldine Delaney Leadership Award is to promote the development of student leaders through their participation in co-curricular and experiential leadership programs at FSU.
