Group features two women who play 10 different instruments
Simple Gifts, an award-winning band featuring two women who play 10 different instruments, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at City Place, 11 Water Street. The concert, part of Frostburg State University’s LIVE! at the Loft series, is free and open to the public. Van shuttles will offer transportation between the FSU campus and City Place.
Simple Gifts features two women playing a variety of ethnic folk music, including everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs, haunting Gypsy melodies and exotic Balkan dance tunes. The group blends styles from diverse cultures with their American roots using an impressive array of instruments: two violins, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, recorders and guitar. The group also plays the bowed psaltery, baritone fiddle, banjolin, guitjo and doumbek. The performance, held in conjunction with FSU’s first Appalachian Festival, shows how today’s musicians combine tradition and innovation to explore the sounds of folk music.
