Joan DeVee Dixon, associate professor of music at Frostburg State University, will present her spring faculty piano recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at Frostburg State University’s Pealer Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The performance will feature Emma Lou Diemer’s “Spirituals for Piano” and include a multi-media presentation. The recital is free and open to the public.
Together, Diemer and Dixon have commissioned and premiered over 100 new works (including four complete CDs). The Diemer “Spirituals” are musical interpretations of beloved tunes such as “There is a Balm in Gilead,” “Give Me Jesus” and “I’ve Got Peace Like a River” and “Were You There?” The entire set was recorded by Dixon and released on CD in 2003.
Dixon has conducted extensive concert tours of the United States, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Palestine, Japan and the Czech Republic. She now performs for music festivals, universities, schools and churches all over the world and her recordings are frequently heard on radio broadcasts throughout the United States. She is a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI).
