Dr. Ellen Grolman, Frostburg State University music professor and author of Joan Tower: The Comprehensive Bio-Bibliography, will lecture about Tower and her music in conjunction with a recital by clarinetist Dr. Mark Gallagher and pianist Frank Corliss at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, in the Performing Arts Center’s Pealer Recital Hall.
The afternoon’s selections will include Joan Tower’s Fantasy (…those harbor lights), Robert Shumann’s Fantasiestüke für Klarinette und Klavier, Op.73, George Phillip Telemann’s Fantasien für Klarinette Solo arranged by Mark Gallagher and John Ireland’s Fantasy–Sonata.
Grolman, who has been an FSU faculty member since 1983, is very active in musicological research, specifically in the field of women composers. In addition to performing and teaching, Grolman appears regularly as a music reviewer and editor for two separate music journals.
Gallagher is currently an assistant professor of clarinet and music theory at FSU. When he is not performing around the world or teaching, Gallagher lectures on the topic of occupational health issues facing musicians. He recently returned from a concert tour in the Netherlands.
Frank Corliss recently joined the faculty at the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York. Prior to that, he was a staff pianist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for many years as well as the Director of Music at one of the nation’s premier private secondary arts schools, the Walnut Hill School.
