Applications are now being accepted from children entering grades 5 through 9 for the “Maryland Summer Center for Mathematics: Mystery + Mastery * Beauty + Power = Infinity!” to be held at Frostburg State University July 23 through 27, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
The program, which is funded by the Maryland State Department of Education, will focus on the beauty of math and exploration. Dr. Daniel Biss, of the University of Chicago and the Clay Mathematics Institute, will share stories detailing his love of math including his experience with taking advanced college math courses at the age of 16.
The program provides its students with the opportunity to form friendships and be challenged with others of similar interests and talents. The students will participate in activities covering interesting content that is not offered in school curriculum. The theme of this year’s program is “What is Infinity?” Students will use and receive the award-winning software, “Geometer’s Sketchpad.”
The program is co-directed by Dr. Gerry Wojnar, FSU Math Department; Pamela Deering, doctoral student in Instructional Design at West Virginia University, and a teaching team of six instructors and two FSU student assistants.
The program is non-residential. Scholarships are available.
