Two local business people were honored recently by Frostburg State University for the entrepreneurial efforts.
Barbara Armstrong received the 2007 Model Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Jason Willetts received the 2007 Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from the University’s Trident Initiative program, a program intended to promote and inspire entrepreneurship and cooperation among the University and the area business community. The awards were presented at the recent Trident Conference at the University by Drs. Keramat Poorsoltan and Sudhir Singh, members of the Frostburg business faculty and directors of the program.
Armstrong is the owner of Armstrong Insurance Agency, located in Frostburg. In addition to contributing to a thriving business community, Armstrong’s efforts to build a better Frostburg were noted. She is a member of several community organizations, including FrostburgFirst, whose aim is the building, promotion and sustainability of a thriving business community. “Success alone was not a criteria,” Poorsoltan said. “Barbara’s endless optimism and enthusiasm with regards to teamwork, revitalization and community spirit is matchless.”
Jason Willetts opened Willets Systems in Cumberland 10 years ago. His company specializes in providing Internet solutions for marketing and communications to a variety of companies through Web site development, e-mail contacts, and other web-based resources. Poorsoltan said the selection committee was impressed not only with Willetts’ success but his services in mentoring area youth and supporting other local agencies. “Jason truly embodies the spirit of the young entrepreneur and serves as a role model to the region’s youth,” he said.
More than 90 people attended the two-day conference held at FSU, where academics, students and business leaders gathered to discuss ways to promote small businesses and encourage entrepreneurs in the Western Maryland region. The Trident Initiative is supported in part through a grant from the Chicago-based Coleman Foundation, which supports entrepreneur education programs.
