Frostburg State University is presenting several public events as part of the ongoing Smithsonian “Key Ingredients: America by Food” exhibition that will be at FSU through Nov. 11.
The lecture “Agriculture, the Environment, Food and Sustainability” will be paired with a showing of the movie “Our Daily Bread,” on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Palace Theatre on Main Street in Frostburg. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. and the film will begin at 8:30 p.m.
Presenter David Smith, a farmer, retired international marketing executive and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, will examine the impact of industrialized agriculture over the last half-century. Smith re-invented his family farm and fostered a booming business though direct marketing. He has served on the board of several non-profit farming organizations and lectures frequently on sustainable energy. The companion film, directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter, examines the world of industrial food production and high-tech farming.

A benefit reading will be held by FSU’s creative writing students and local writers on Monday, Nov. 5, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in FSU’s Exploratorium on the first floor of the Compton Science Center. The reading will benefit local food banks. Please bring a non-perishable food item to contribute.
FSU folklorist Dr. Kara Rogers Thomas will present “Sacred Foodways: Food and Religion” on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. in Compton Science Center 226. She will examine the integral role food plays in religious belief and practice, covering the role of food in Native American traditions, Jewish religious proscriptions and Christian religious practices. Rogers Thomas is assistant professor of Folklore and Sociology at FSU. Her areas of research include American regionalism and Appalachian cultural heritage, religious practice and traditional belief and environmental preservation and restoration. “Key Ingredients” delves into the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations of the American table.
