Frostburg State University has made great strides in using the Internet to increase the accessibility of its educational opportunities, both through courses that are fully online and with blended courses that combine classroom and online activities. Now FSU is taking this technology a step further to allow prospective graduate students to get answers to their questions about the post baccalaureate programs offered at both the FSU campus and the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown at the speed of a face-to-face meeting, but without having to leave their homes.
“Today, the typical prospective graduate student is a working professional trying to find the balance between personal life and career”, said Vickie Mazer, Director of Graduate Services. “Finding the time to investigate various options for pursuing a Master’s degree is a difficult task and is often the first barrier to taking the plunge of returning to school, even when that move could enhance a career or even provide an opportunity for a change in career.”
FSU has now made this step easier through a technology called webinar – interactive Internet-based meetings that allow for prospective students to get the answers they need instantly. A webinar is a type of web conference where a presenter interacts in a live online meeting with an audience through text and voice. Participants register online and participate by using their computer and phone to get connected. This new technology erases the boundaries of geography and allows anyone, no matter the location, to take part in a virtual open house event.
FSU will be hosting its first webinar highlighting the Master of Business Administration program on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. A second webinar, this one focusing on the Master of Arts in Teaching program, will be Thursday, Nov. 20, also at 7 p.m.
While FSU continues to offer the traditional, on-site open house events to allow for the face to face interaction that some prefer, this new webinar technology is being offered for those who would find it to difficult or costly to travel to an on-site event.
“Making it easier for students to access us is our goal,” said Mazer. “That is why we are piloting this new technology.”
