Frostburg State University Theatre’s Second Stage series will present the dark comedy “Recent Tragic Events” by Craig Wright on Thursday, Dec. 11, and Friday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the F. Perry Smith Studio Theatre of the Performing Arts Center.
The scene is Sept. 12, 2001; the setting is the Minneapolis apartment of Waverly, a young advertising executive. Soon to venture on a blind date amid the media coverage of the 9/11 attacks, Waverly can’t get through to her sister, Wendy, who may or may not have been in lower Manhattan at the World Trade Center. As the evening unfolds, she and her date, Andrew, discover a succession of connections to each other while her crazed-musician neighbor Ron and his girlfriend Nancy come over for pizza and to watch “Attack on America.” Her great aunt, who is stranded at the airport and happens to be noted author Joyce Carol Oates, also drops in, bringing yet another startling perception of the day’s events.
A simultaneously tragic, funny and serious take on the aftermath of 9/11, “Recent Tragic Events” was among many in a series of plays written during the aftermath of 9/11.
