Frostburg State University students showed their dedication to health and wellness during the course of the “Are You the Biggest Loser on Campus?” competition. Twenty teams participated during the course of the two-month long event, which began March 2 and ran through May 2.
Overseen by FSU senior Courtney McCall, the competition brought together CHILL (“Creating Healthy, Informed, Lasting Lifestyles”), a campus-wide wellness initiative supported by a contribution from AstraZeneca, FSU’s Brady Health Center and the University’s Department of Health & Physical Education. “Are You the Biggest Loser on Campus?” emphasized physical fitness, nutrition and participation in campus activities. Teams were awarded points for donating blood, participating in CHILL activities, attending team workout sessions and maintaining weekly nutrition logs.
Though weight loss was not the central goal of the competition, many teams saw results in their shrinking waistlines. Top teams The Fantastic Four, The Carrot Styx and The Lollipop Kids lost a combined total of 114 pounds and logged how many hours they spent working out and their involvement in campus activities focused on wellness.
“I really enjoyed the program,” said student participant Brittany Cramer. “I had a lot of fun and it gave me the motivation to start a healthier lifestyle.”
First-place team The Fantastic Four, comprised of Tiffany Reid, Jeremiah Boulware, Shawna Spriggs and Vicki Pidich, accumulated the most participation points and lost the most weight through the course of the program. All together, The Fantastic Four lost a combined total of 77 pounds. The team accredited their success within the program to their student trainer Keisha Lewis. Lewis, a senior Exercise and Sports Science major, not only motivated the team to be active physically, but also emphasized the importance of eating healthy and getting plenty of rest.
“This program really shows how capable our students are,” said April Baer, project coordinator for University Wellness. “We were able to utilize the talents and strengths of our student leaders and participants to emphasize the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. Our students can accomplish anything with the right encouragement and support—whether it comes from the faculty, staff or themselves.”
“Are You The Biggest Loser on Campus?” was designed, coordinated and managed by students for students. CHILL, Brady Health Center and the Health and Physical Education Department will offer the program again in spring 2010.
