In celebration of International Women’s Day, Frostburg State University will present a “Congo Teach-In” led by Dr. James Walker of the Department of Philosophy on Monday, March 8, at 6 p.m. in Compton Science Center room 226. This event is designed to alert people about the history and current situation of atrocities committed against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Women’s Studies program at FSU will host this event.
Throughout the day on the campus of FSU, students and faculty will engage in provocative and interactive "happenings” that highlight local and global contributions of women. Walker and audience members will engage in a free-ranging discussion about the DRC.
The DRC is the 2010 spotlight for V-Day, a worldwide organization working to end violence against women and girls. This program is part of a new global V-Day campaign to call attention to the wide-scale issues that women face today. The campaign is being initiated by V-Day and UNICEF, representing the UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict. For more information, visit www.vday.org.
FSU’s “Congo Teach-In” is co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies program, V-Day FSU, Students for Women’s Issues and Amnesty International. This event is free and open to the public.
