The Philosophy Department at Frostburg State University will present its spring 2010 Philosophical Forum, “The Puzzle of Divine Forgiveness,” on Tuesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in Dunkle Hall room 218.
The forum presenter is Dr. Sharon Ryan, associate professor of philosophy and chair of the Philosophy Department at West Virginia University. The presentation will be followed by a free-ranging discussion between Ryan and the audience.
Divine forgiveness is an important element in monotheistic religions, such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Ryan will reflect on the apparent contradiction between the belief in divine forgiveness and the belief in divine perfection. This apparent contradiction stems from the fact that forgiveness, in human terms, entails an evolution or modification of consciousness on the part of the forgiving subject. The presenter will discuss this puzzle as well as some possible solutions.
The lecture and discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Jean-Marie Makang at 301-687-3089 or jmakang@frostburg.edu.
