This year the recognized Greek organizations at Frostburg State University have been very active in supporting the University and many local and national nonprofit and philanthropic causes.
To date for 2009-2010, they have raised over $14,000 as a combined effort, $11,000 of that donated to various local nonprofit organizations for Homecoming weekend, including $500 to the Humane Society, $4,802 to the YMCA, $1,401 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, $391 to the March of Dimes, $700 to Habitat for Humanity, $1,430 to the Special Olympics, $280 to the American Cancer Society and $1,500 to the Alzheimer’s Association. They have also donated over 900 pounds of food to the Maryland Food Bank and 64 prom dresses for the Cinderella Gown Program.
To raise money, they held a Carnival during the fall semester, did face painting at the Cresaptown Halloween Fair, helped deliver Thanksgiving baskets, sold blankets for St. Jude’s, sold Longaberger baskets for the March of Dimes and held a cupcake-eating contest for Breast Cancer Awareness.
They also helped shovel and spread mulch for Beall Elementary School and helped neighbors shovel out their driveways this winter.
They have assisted with the Special Olympics, Storybook Holiday, the Halloween Parade, the Shrine’s Halloween Haunted House, Frostburg Fall Fest and the Haunted Museum, Operation Christmas Child, the Mt. Savage Halloween Event, the Book Event at City Place and local street clean ups.
At FSU they held educational sessions such as Sex Signals (which included an informational speaker on sexual assault awareness) and Career Portfolio Night as well as sessions on Disney internships and Target employment. They also held entertainment events such as the NPHC Step Show, All Campus Sing, music recitals and a benefit concert to support local nonprofit organizations.
