The Frostburg State University Wind Ensemble, University Chorale, Guitar Ensemble and Clarinet Choir will join forces to present the Department of Music’s Holiday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The concert will include various selections that reflect the holiday spirit.
Under the direction of Philip Klickman, the FSU Wind Ensemble will perform “Holiday Piece” by David Foster, arranged by Jay Dawson; “Overture to ‘The Nutcracker’” by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky; “Divinum Mysterium,” a 13th-century plainsong arranged by Tom Wallace; “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Gabriel Fauré, arranged by Larry Daehn; “Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 8” (“Fatto per la Notte di Natale”) by Arcangelo Corelli, arranged by Mark Hindsley; “The Eighth Candle” by Steve Reisteter; and “Farandole” from “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2” by Georges Bizet, arranged by Larry Daehn.
Selections by the Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Stephen Tunstall, will include “Sarabande” by George Frederic Handel, featuring Robert Wallace, Alex Althouse and Michael Avery; “Two Duos for Guitar” by Fernando Carulli, featuring Seth Carter and Casey Stahlman; and “Cordoba” by Isaac Albeniz, with Jeff Pomerantz, Zach Dodge, Brandon Arnold and Ryan Smith.
The FSU Clarinet Choir, directed by Mark Gallagher, will perform the humorous “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Moore, arranged by William Jamieson and featuring Klickman as the narrator.
The University Chorale’s performance will include two selections from Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols” – “Adam Lay Ybounden” with student conductor Emily Hornbaker and “That Yonge Child” with Laura Fehle, student conductor. The men will perform Jeffrey Ames’ arrangement of the South African freedom song “Tshotsholoza.”
Conducted by Dr. Karen Soderberg and assisted by pianist Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon, the chorale will also perform the traditional Estonian song “Ule Lume Lagadale” (“Over the Snowy Winter Roads”), arranged by Ken Berg; “Gloria Fanfare” by Jeffrey Ames, featuring David Wall and Daniel Reynolds, trumpet; and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “O Clap Your Hands” and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols,” featuring cellist Ellen Grolman and baritone Christopher Delgado.
The program will conclude with Klickman conducting the University Chorale and Wind Ensemble in a performance of “Merry Christmas, Everyone!” by Steven Reineke and “A Holiday Sing-Along” that includes the audience.
Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students and free for children 16 and younger. Tickets will be available at the door.
