The Frostburg State University Foundation, through its Annual Fund, awarded financial support to 31 project proposals from faculty, staff and students, as part of its ongoing efforts to reinvest in the campus community. Solicited during the spring 2011 semester by the Foundation, the proposals were selected because of how they supported the goals of student enrichment, academic enrichment and regional and cultural enrichment, the themes of FSU’s Staking Our Claim: The Campaign for Frostburg.
“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from the FSU community and from advancement professionals at our peer institutions about this process that allows us to put money back into the campus. People have told us this is a unique funding opportunity that not many schools offer nationally,” said B.J. Davisson II, vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the FSU Foundation. “We intend to increase the Annual Fund so there will be more unrestricted gift revenues to disperse through this competitive process each year. We believe these grants give people at FSU a sense of ownership in how Frostburg is growing and improving.”
Nearly $98,000 was allocated toward funding proposals, a portion of the $193,994 raised for the unrestricted Annual Fund in fiscal year 2011, which also supported the FSU Alumni Association, faculty and staff awards and provides student aid. Thirty-one out of 47 submitted proposals were selected by the FSU Foundation Board of Directors during a meeting held on June 3. This is the fourth year the Foundation has made unrestricted gift revenues available to a variety of campus projects proposed by students, faculty and staff. Copies of funded proposals are on public file in the Lewis J. Ort Library.
Examples of project proposals that were awarded funding include:
• Providing textbook scholarships to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students living in STEM @ Sowers Hall, a freshman experience residence hall for students intending to major in STEM programs. The scholarships, which will go toward academic materials purchased in the University Store, will recognize high-achieving STEM students.
• Purchasing equipment and supplies to enlist students’ help in doing research to describe the physical properties of Marcellus Shale. The goal of the research project is to determine the feasibility of enhancing the extraction of natural gas using supercritical carbon dioxide and assess the possibility of using Marcellus Shale formations for long-term carbon sequestration. Funding was also requested and awarded to help students present their work at a national conference to offset travel and lodging.
• Helping FSU’s Learning Green, Living Green Executive Committee, in conjunction with the Going Green Subcommittee of the Residence Hall Association, establish a student recycling and resource conservation competition, in which students will be encouraged to recycle as much as possible each academic year in their respective residence halls. Funding would be used as a reward to students in residence halls that have been identified as winners based on the data collected by the FSU Physical Plant.
• Supporting student efforts to serve in their communities by supplying transportation to large events as well as helping to send students to a variety of destinations over their school breaks to serve and experience the culture of that area through alternative breaks. Funds will be spent on transportation expenses, housing, volunteer fees and food for students to attend alternative spring breaks over winter and spring breaks at FSU.
