Activities for Life at Frostburg State University will offer preschool, beginner and intermediate/advanced tumbling classes. All classes will be in the Cordts Physical Education Center, room 170, on Wednesdays from Feb. 8 through March 7.
The preschool tumbling class will meet from 5 to 5:30 p.m., and is for children ages 3 to 4. The class is limited to 12 students, with little to no formal tumbling training. The class will include activities such as cartwheels, rolls and other simple movements. The activities will teach flexibility, strength, muscle control and coordination. All parents are required to participate with their child during all class times.
The beginner’s class will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and is for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The class will include basic floor tumbling exercises and some work on the low balance beam. Space for this class is limited to 15 participants, with a minimum of seven.
The intermediate/advanced class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and although there is no age requirement, there are certain activities that the child must be able to perform. He or she must be able to do a solid cartwheel, working toward a solid round off or solid round off and working toward a solid standing back handspring. The class is limited to 15 students, with a minimum of seven.
Intermediate individuals will work on skills that work toward a back handspring, such as handstand holds, forward rolls, snap down, jump-backs on a cheese mat, right/left-side cartwheels, one-armed cartwheels, aerials with spot, backbend kick over with spot and front handspring over a barrel.
Advanced individuals will work on a solid round off, working toward a solid standing back handspring, solid round-off back handspring series passes, round-off back handspring tucks, round-off tucks, standing tucks and punch fronts.
