Frostburg State University’s Center for Creative Writing will host its annual Savage Mountain Creative Writing Workshop from Sunday, June 24, through Saturday, June 30, on the FSU campus. The workshop is an opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to spend a week of intensive study in fiction or poetry writing. The cost for commuter students is $300, and for those residing on campus, $550.
Students will gain experience with literature and language beyond an average high school’s goals and requirements. They will learn about the production of polished poems, stories, essays and online publication as well as have the chance to study with respected and published contemporary poets, writers of fiction and essayists.
This year the workshop will feature center director, FSU faculty member and writer of fiction Gerry LaFemina, author of the short story collection “Wish List,” and poet Jennifer Merrifield, author of “American Proper.” Friends and family are invited to attend a student reading and reception on Saturday, June 30, at Main Street Books in downtown Frostburg.
To register, visit www.frostburg.edu/savagemtn/writing/writing.htm. The registration deadline is Wednesday, June 20. For more information about the workshop and financial assistance, contact LaFemina at 301-687-4340 or glafemina@frostburg.edu.
