WFWM 91.9, public radio from Frostburg State University, and the Tri-State Community School for the Arts in Cumberland will provide two scholarships to this year’s DelFest Academy being held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds May 20 through 23. The DelFest Academy takes place before the annual DelFest, a music festival hosted by bluegrass legend Del McCoury. It is a friendly, but intensive, three-day experience that will give musicians the opportunity to work with some of the finest bluegrass musicians. Instruction is available for banjo, bass, fiddle, guitar and mandolin.
Two scholarships will be given, with both scholarships available to a young musician age 18 or younger. The WFWM scholarship will also be available to currently enrolled college students. Scholarships are limited to residents of Allegany, Garrett or Mineral counties, or students enrolled at one of those county’s colleges or universities.
Applicants must have intermediate-level musical skills and are asked to perform two songs limited to two minutes each – one fast piece and one ballad, both unaccompanied.
Applicants will also be asked to demonstrate financial need. Applications are available at the Allegany Arts Council, Tri-State Community School for the Arts and WFWM, or by going to the Tri-State or WFWM Facebook pages at www.facebook.com/TriStateCommunitySchoolfortheArts or www.facebook.com/wfwmradio. Applications are due on Feb. 28 and can be mailed or dropped off at Tri-State Community School for the Arts or WFWM. Applications will be reviewed on March 2 and narrowed down to six finalists.
On Thursday, March 14, the six scholarship finalists will have the opportunity to perform at the Mountain City Traditional Arts Center in Frostburg for a panel of judges, including including Rob McCoury and his wife, Lisa, from the Del McCoury Band.
