As part of the annual Appalachian Festival, Frostburg State University will host a film festival and afternoon symposium on Appalachian topics. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Unveiling Appalachian Otherness and Stories for Change.” It is free and open to the public.

Frostburg State University’s much-anticipated Appalachian Festival will return for its ninth year from Thursday, Sept. 18, to Saturday, Sept. 20. The free, family-friendly event brings together artists and craftspeople to celebrate all that makes the region unique – its history, culture, music, food and more – with performances, workshops, displays, discussions and activities.

First Allegany County Opportunity Scholarships Awarded to ACM, FSU Students

With the beginning of the fall semester, local students at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) or Frostburg State University (FSU) are now receiving the first Allegany County Opportunity Scholarships. The Allegany County Commissioners, Michael W. McKay, Creade V. Brodie, Jr., and William R. Valentine, established the Allegany County Opportunity Scholarship, benefitting Allegany County residents attending either ACM or  FSU.

Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series Announces 2014-15 Season

In its 37th annual season, the Frostburg State University Cultural Events Series offers performances from professional artists in the genres of music, dance and theatre. Tri-state residents can choose from events offered as part of two performance series. The Main Stage Series presents artists in a traditional theatrical setting, while LIVE! at StarScape offers an intimate club-style atmosphere.

FSU to Present “En Plein Air en Studio” Exhibition

Frostburg State University’s Department of Visual Arts will present “En Plein Air en Studio,” an exhibition of paintings by FSU alumni David Diaz and Linda Humbertson, Friday, Sept. 5, through Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery in FSU’s Fine Arts Building. The opening reception will be held on Sept. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

FSU Center for Creative Writing Announces Winners of One-Act Playwriting Competition

The Frostburg State University Center for Creative Writing announces “Love in a Minor Key” by David Finney of Chicago, Ill., as the winner of the 2014 One-Act Playwriting Competition for the Frostburg One-Act Play Festival. The second-place play is “It’s Your Funeral” by Barry H. Weinberg of Bethesda, Md., and the third-place play is “The Search for a Life Worth Repeating” by Larry Ukolowicz of Fort Worth, Texas.

FSU’s Dr. Ronald Horner a Quarterfinalist for GRAMMY’s Music Education Award

Dr. Ronald G. Horner, who teaches percussion in the Department of Music at Frostburg State University, has been named a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation.
