The mission of the FSU Leadership Program is to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities through the use of multiple leadership techniques, theories, and models. Through our program we provide students with opportunities to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes understanding of self, others, and community, and an understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities inherent in community membership.

“A leader is one who is able to affect positive change for the betterment of others, the community and society…. Leadership involves collaborative relationships that lead to collective action grounded in the shared values of people who work together to affect positive change.”

Mirrored after the Social Change Model for Leadership Development, Frostburg State University adapts the core basic premises of social change in its comprehensive “theory to practice” leadership initiatives:

  • • Leadership is viewed as a process rather than a position
  • • Participatory leadership enhances student learning and development
  • • Leadership competence is achieved through collaborative learning
  • • Service is a powerful tool for developing student leadership capabilities
