CCBC in Catonsville - Frequently Asked Questions

The following are frequently asked questions about the Frostburg program at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus.

QUESTION: What Frostburg State University degrees can I earn at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus?

Students can complete two degrees from Frostburg State University at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus? These are:

  • BS degree in Recreation and Parks Management
  • BS degree in Recreation and Parks Management with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation

QUESTION: Can I complete the entire program at Catonsville?

Yes, the program is designed for students to complete the entire program at Catonsville. For most students this means that they will need to take some courses at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus, take Frostburg State University courses at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus, and take their advanced composition course in the General Education requirements from another four year institution in the region such as the UMBC or Towson. For many students, their first visit to the main campus in Frostburg is to walk across the stage at graduation.

QUESTION: Is there a limit on how many credits that I can take from the other institutions?

Yes. You can take no more than 70 credits from a community college. Some students will take additional courses from CCBC that meet a specific requirement in the Frostburg program. If they add this course, then they will need to delete a course on the transfer evaluation since they can transfer no more than 70 credits. You can take no more than 90 credits from all other institutions and you must take a minimum of 30 credits from Frostburg. We call this the 70, 90, 30 rule. Please note that there are some other requirements that the program coordinator will cover with you. A typical student usually completes approximately 39 credits from Frostburg. They complete their advanced composition course at UMBC, Towson or another four year institution. This leaves three courses or nine credits that they take at the UMBC or Towson.

QUESTION: I am a therapeutic recreation student and not a general recreation student. How does this affect my course requirements?

The same 70, 90, 30 rule applies. However, since you take nine credits of upper division therapeutic recreation courses from Frostburg, most students find that the only course that they have to take at the UMBC, Towson or another four-year institution is the advanced composition course.

QUESTION: I have an Associate's degree in General Studies. Do I need to complete the AAS degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism from the CCBC first?

No, you do not need to complete the AAS degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism from CCBC first. The program is designed to accommodate the community college student. If you complete an associate's degree from a community college, you can enter directly into the Frostburg program. If you have a BS degree from another institution, you can enter directly into the Frostburg program. If you complete the concentration in Therapeutic Recreation, you can directly enter into the Frostburg program.

QUESTION: So, if I enter directly into the Frostburg State University program, will I need to take any community college course from the Recreation, Parks and Tourism program at the CCBC?

It depends. Frostburg utilizes the following equivalent CCBC courses in its program: Introduction to Recreation and Parks, Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Leadership and Program Planning. If you have not completed these courses elsewhere, you will need to complete these courses offered from the Recreation, Parks and Tourism Program at CCBC for the Frostburg program. This is because as part of its collaborative program with CCBC, Frostburg utilizes these CCBC courses within its program and it does not normally offer these courses as an actual Frostburg class.

QUESTION: I just graduated from high school and want to stay at home and complete the program. What do I do?

We would suggest that you use the traditional 2+2 approach. Enroll in the AAS degree program in Recreation, Parks and Tourism at the CCBC. After you earn 50 credits, you can enroll in the Frostburg program and begin working on your four year degree. Be sure that you graduate from the program. It is necessary for the completion of the Frostburg program. You will find that this approach is relatively 'seamless' since the two programs integrate well with each other.

QUESTION: I am a non-traditional student. Do you offer classes for people like me?

Yes, the program offers many of its classes during the late afternoon and early evening, between 4:00 - 7:00 pm.

QUESTION: How do I apply for the Frostburg program at the CCBC?

You can easily register for the program online. Click here and travel directly to the application process. Look for the check-off box that identifies you as a CCBC student.
