CCBC in Catonsville - Curriculum

For students completing the Recreation and Parks Management program at the CCBC, Catonsville Campus, the requirements for the major are the same as those for the main campus. However, most students at CCBC approach the completion of these requirements a little differently than the more traditional students on the main campus. This site will provide you with an overview of the program at CCBC campus. Conceptually, you will need to complete four blocks of courses to graduate.

The first block of courses is your General Education requirements. These consist of 40 credits including advanced composition. Except for advanced composition, you can complete these courses at either a community college or at another four-year school. Advanced composition is a 300 level course that you will need to complete at a four-year school. The CCBC coordinator will help you navigate your general education requirements. The General Education requirements are not listed on this web page. You can review the General Education requirements on the general web site of Frostburg State University.

The second block of courses that you will need to complete is the major or discipline courses. These requirements are listed under Item A below. The discipline consists of 39 credits that includes both CCBC and Frostburg courses.

Depending on the courses that you transfer into the program, most students will need to take several courses in the Recreation, Leisure and Tourism program (RL&T) at CCBC as part of their discipline block. This is because the Frostburg program utilizes four of CCBC courses in its core as part of its collaborative program in an effort to economize the use of resources. These courses are noted below. If you have completed 70 credits from a community college, this means that you will probably have to drop a course off your transfer evaluation to bring one of these courses into the program. The CCBC coordinator will assist you in this process. Most students will find that they simply take these CCBC courses and transfer them directly into the Frostburg program as their equivalent course.

The third block of courses that you will need to complete is an area of specialization. The area of specialization is a requirement of the major. The approaches for CCBC students that meet these requirements are listed under Item B below. Currently, the Therapeutic Recreation Concentration is the only concentration that the program offers at the CCBC. If you complete this concentration, you will meet the graduation requirements of the program. If you are a general recreation student, you will need to complete one of the other requirements listed below under Item B. Again, CCBC coordinator will assist you with your individualized program here.

The fourth block of courses that you will need to complete is your free electives. Free electives are simply the difference between 120 credits or the minimum number of credits that the University requires for graduation and the total of the three blocks of courses delineated above. Normally, any course not used in one of the three previous blocks is used here.

Please note that many students will need to complete some additional Frostburg courses in their free electives in order to meet the general university requirements. You may only transfer 70 credits from a community college and 90 credits from all other institutions (i.e. 20 credits from other four-year institutions if you have your AA degree). You must take a minimum of 30 credits from Frostburg. On average, most student take approximately 39 credits from Frostburg including the 24 credits required in the discipline. Again, the CCBC coordinator will work with you to find the right mix of courses that will satisfy this University requirement.
