Financial Aid for Transfer Students

At Frostburg, the total yearly cost (tuition, fees, room and board) is one of the best values anywhere. We try to meet transfer students’ college funding needs, offering scholarships, grants, loans and campus employment. 

Associate Degree Scholarship - $2,500 

Frostburg State University has long valued the academic commitment of our community college transfer students.  This award has been developed to recognize and honor transfer students who have earned an Associate Degree with high academic standing.

This award will help keep the tuition cost at FSU close to the amount that students pay at their community colleges.

  • degree from a Maryland community college or Potomac State College of West Virginia University with a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA.  If you have attended more than one institution, you must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA with all college academic work combined and additional review may be necessary.
  • The degree must be an A.A. (Associate of Arts), A.S. (Associate of Science), A.S.E. (Associate of Science in Engineering) or A.A.T. (Associate of Arts in Teaching).  Students who have earned an A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) may be considered for the award depending on their program of study. 
  • The amount of the award is $2,500 per year ($1,250 per semester) and may be awarded for a total of four semesters, provided you maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at Frostburg State, earn 24 credits per year, and register as a full-time student.

Academic Excellence Scholarships for Transfer Students

To be eligible, you must have earned a minimum of 30 transferable credits at time of application AND a 3.7 cumulative GPA. You must enroll at FSU full time. The award varies from $1,000 to $2,000 per academic year to be applied toward total cost of education.  It may be renewed for up to six semesters provided you maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and complete at least 24 credits per academic year. The degree of student’s academic excellence will determine the initial amount of the award. Students with financial need may be eligible for additional funds; therefore, all applicants are encouraged to file the FAFSA form.  Transfer students are not eligible to receive both the Academic Excellence and the Associate Degree Scholarships.

F. Perry Smith, Jr. Scholarship

The recipient must have completed a high school education or equivalency in either Allegany or Garrett counties of Maryland and be enrolled at FSU with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better, or be accepted with a transferable overall grade point average of 3.0 or better. The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

Academic Excellence Leadership Award
To apply for this award, you must provide a summary of leardership activites as well as a minumum of three letters of recommendation documenting your leadership roles or activities to the Admissions Office.  This award is renewable for up to six sumesters for transfer students provided that you maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and complete at least 24 credits per academic year.

  • Along with government grants, Frostburg State University offers many departmental and university-wide scholarships. They can be found online at www.frostburg.edu/grants&scholarships.
  • Residents of the counties contiguous to Frostburg State University’s campuses are eligible for a tuition reduction of over $4,000 per year if enrolled at FSU full time. Those counties include the following: Bedford, Franklin, Fulton and Somerset in Pennsylvania; Loudoun, Virginia; and in Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mineral and Morgan in West Virginia. It may be combined with other FSU scholarships.
  • The FAFSA form needs to be completed and submitted by March 1 to be eligible for scholarships. The FAFSA form is available at fafsa.ed.gov. FSU’s code is 002072.
