Debt Management

Our office is dedicated to helping students understand the significance of student loans and the dangers of credit card debt. It is for this reason that we would like students to be aware of the financial management information available to them free of charge.

You may also access helpful tools, calculators, and information by visiting the following websites.

In addition to understanding credit and student loan debt, we encourage each student to check their credit report regularly. Checking your credit report regularly will alert you to identity theft, or any errors your credit report may contain. Each individual is entitled to a free credit report from each of the major three credit bureaus every 12 months, in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. To learn how to access your free credit report, please select the link below.

Parent PLUS vs. Student Alternative Loans

Our office recommends that parents borrow through the Parent PLUS Loan Program instead of having students borrowing an Alternative Loan, if possible. Please click the following link for more information on the differences between the Parent PLUS Loan program and the Student Alternative Loan program.

Stafford Loan Exit Interview

If you are no longer attending Frostburg State University for any reason, but borrowed a Federal Stafford Loan while you were enrolled, then you are required to complete a Stafford Loan Exit Counseling Interview. Please keep in mind that you will need your Federal PIN to log into the website. If you have misplaced your Federal PIN, you must go to the Federal PIN website to retrieve it. Please note that the financial aid office is unable to retrieve your Federal PIN on your behalf. If you experience problems retrieving your PIN, please contact the U.S. Department of Education by calling 1-800-433-3243. You will need the addresses and phone numbers of at least three references to complete the Exit Counseling. Exit Counseling will take approximately 30 minutes. To begin your required Exit Counseling, please select the link below:

Once you have arrived at the website above, please click the "Exit Counseling" link at the top of the page. Make sure to choose "Start"and not "Tour". "Tour" does not count towards completing your exit interview requirement.
