Debt Management

Our office is dedicated to helping students understand the significance of student loans and the dangers of credit card debt. It is for this reason that we would like students to be aware of the financial management information available to them free of charge. Frostburg State University's preferred loan servicing agent, Great Lakes, has many online resources available to students. These resources include information on managing debt, understanding financial aid, using credit, managing a budget, and understanding student loan repayment and consolidation. Please select the link below to access these free resources. Once you have arrived at Great Lakes' website, select "Borrowers," and then choose from the menu to the left.

You may also access helpful tools, calculators, and information by visiting the American Education Services (AES) website.

In addition to understanding credit and student loan debt, we encourage each student to check their credit report regularly. Checking your credit report regularly will alert you to identity theft, or any errors your credit report may contain. Each individual is entitled to a free credit report from each of the major three credit bureaus every 12 months, in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. To learn how to access your free credit report, please select the link below.

Parent PLUS vs. Student Alternative Loans

Our office recommends that parents borrow through the Parent PLUS Loan Program instead of having students borrowing an Alternative Loan, if possible. Please click the following link for more information on the differences between the Parent PLUS Loan program and the Student Alternative Loan program.

Stafford Loan Exit Interview

If you are no longer attending Frostburg State University for any reason, but borrowed a Federal Stafford Loan while you were enrolled, then you are required to complete a Stafford Loan Exit Counseling Interview. Before you complete the exit interview, you will need to access your student loan history by visiting the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) online. NSLDS will provide you with information that will enable you to get the most from your exit counseling experience. Please select the link below to access NSLDS. Please keep in mind that you will need your Federal PIN to log into the website. If you have misplaced your Federal PIN, you must go to the Federal PIN website to retrieve it. Please note that the financial aid office is unable to retrieve your Federal PIN on your behalf.

Once you have accessed NSLDS and viewed your student loan history, please proceed to the Stafford Loan Exit Counseling Interview. Before you can complete the interview you will either be asked to create an account or log in using an account you have previously created. Most students create an account as a freshman, when they complete their Entrance Interview and Master Promissory Note (MPN). If you already have an account, but do not remember your password, please attempt to retrieve your password by using the "forget password" utility on the exit counseling page. If you are unable to retrieve your password, please submit a "reset password" request via email to the Financial Aid Office. In this request, please include your FSU student ID number, your name, your date of birth, as well as a new password. Please email this information to fsufinaid@frostburg.edu. You will be notified via email when your password has been successfully changed. Please select the link below to access the Stafford Loan Exit Counseling Interview:
