Outside Sources When trying to locate money for college, students are not limited to the financial aid offered to them by Frostburg State University. In addition to federal, state, and institutional aid, outside civic and private organizations often have money to offer students that apply. A collection of outside grant, scholarship, and self-help programs is listed below.
Minority Scholarships
The Mary Rubin and Benjamin M. Rubin Scholarship Fund – The Mary and Benjamin Rubin Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist women who are residents of the state of Maryland with the cost of attending college. In addition to being female and a permanent resident of the state of Maryland, students must meet specific academic and income criteria in order to be eligible for the Mary and Benjamin Rubin Scholarship Fund. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $2,500 per year, and may only be applied to tuition. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, to the Central Scholarship Bureau by March 1st. The GE-Reagan Scholarship Program - The GE-Reagan Scholarship Program is a scholarship program designed to assist graduating high school seniors planning to attend college pursuing a bachelor's degree in Fall 2011. To qualify, a student must be a resident of the United States, demonstrate financial need, have a high school GPA of at least a 3.0, demonstrate leadership ability and be nominated by an eligible community leader and recommended by an authority figure. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, by March 18, 2011. Awards will be up to $10,000 a year, renewable for up to three additional years. The Karen Ann Stansbury-Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund - The Karen Ann Stansbury-Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist students who have been involved in community service with money for college. To qualify, a student must be a resident of Anne Arundel Co., MD; Baltimore Co., MD; or Baltimore City, MD; and have obtained a high school education from one of these counties. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need, a high school GPA of at least a 3.0, and involvement in a community service program. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, to the KASBMSF by June 1st. The Angie M. Houtz Memorial Scholarship - The Angie M. Houtz Memorial Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist students who have been involved in community service with money for college. To qualify, a student must attend or be accepted to a public two or four year college in Maryland; be a full-time student; have a GPA of at least a 3.0, and have participated in at least 100 hours of community service. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, to the Angie Fund by March 15th. The Pauletta & Denzel Washington Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award - Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Awards are available to support the research in the fields of Blood-Brian Barrier and Drug Delivery into the CNS, Tumor Immunology and Cancer Vaccine, Gene Therapy, Gene Discover, and Advanced Surgical Technology. Awards are available for full-time undergraduate and graduate students majoring or intending to major in science, who are interested in performing research in the above mentioned areas. Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., are expected to submit an abstract or scientific paper on their research to a national neuroscience, cancer or neurosurgery meeting at the end of their summer fellowship with the Division, and must be able to travel to Los Angeles, California, to attend the award ceremony. Pauletta & Denzel Washington Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarship Fund - The Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarship Fund Awards are available to residents of Maryland or the District of Columbia (D.C.) who are majoring in Business or Education. Students must demonstrate scholastic achievement and financial need. Six scholarships may be awarded each year, with at least one going to an individual enrolled in an approved program leading to teacher certification. Jacobus Scholarship Fund Haz La U (Make the U) Educational Grant - The Haz La U Educational Grant is given to legal U.S. residents of Hispanic decent who are seniors in high school and wish to attend college. Students must be at least 16 years old and matriculate to a college within two years of receiving the award. Sixteen awards are given. There will be one grand prize of $10,000 and 15 first prizes of $1,000 each. There can only be one winner per household. To apply, students must complete an application form and write an essay on the topic of how education can impact the heritage of Hispanic generations to come. To view the application requirements, or to apply for this scholarship, you may download a copy of The Haz La U Educational Grant Application by clicking the link below. mtvU/Point Foundation Scholarship Fund - The mtvU/Point Foundation Scholarship Awards are available to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, or non-LGBT students who demonstrate leadership, scholastic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, involvement in the LGBT community, and financial or emotional need. This scholarship has a value of $10,000. To view the application requirements, or to apply for this scholarship, you may download a copy of the mtvU/PointFoundation Scholarship Program by clicking the link below. mtvU/Point Foundation Scholarship Fund USM Women's Forum Scholarship Fund - The USM Women's Forum Scholarship Fund provides several $500 scholarships to eligible undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in an USM institution. These awards are available to both men and women. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen enrolled in a USM institution, have a minimum 2.8 GPA, have completed 48 or more undergraduate credits or 9 or more graduate credits, and provide proof of financial need. Applicants must submit a complete application, as well as copies of official transcripts, copies of federal tax statements or financial aid statements for the previous two years, and a personal statement documenting short and long-term educational and career goals. Completed applications along with supporting documentation must be received no later than June 30, 2008. Preferred candidates will be residents of the State of Maryland and be pursuing educational and career goals that focus on the social, economic, political, scientific, and health conditions that impact women. Women's Forum Scholarship Fund Talbot's Women's Scholarship Fund - Awards are available to women who earned their high school diploma or GED at least 10 years ago, and are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in an accredited undergraduate course of study. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining before they are to complete their undergraduate degree, and cannot have already obtained a bachelor's degree. Talbot's Women's Scholarship Fund Spectrum Women's Opportunity Award - Awards are available to women who are have the primary responsibility of supporting their family (including children, spouse, siblings and/or parents). Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in an accredited undergraduate course of study. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. Spectrum Women's Opportunity Award Graduate Teaching Scholarships from CSB - The Central Scholarship Bureau has several scholarships available to graduate students who are aspiring to become teachers, including the Straus Foundation Grant for Teachers, which is a grant of up to $5,000 given to graduate students in education planning to teach math or science in the Baltimore City Public Schools; the BHD Endowed Scholarship Fund for Teachers, which provides scholarship funding for graduate students planning to teach in public schools upon graduation; and the Kassap Family Scholarship Fund for Teachers, which provides 4 scholarships of up to $5,000 each to graduate education students, with preference given to those planning to teach in Maryland public schools. The CSB requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a maximum family income of $91,000 per year (the median for the State of Maryland) for most of its programs. The Bedford County Conservation District Scholarships - The Bedford County Conservation District has two scholarships available to undergraduate students who are studying in the field of environmental science. Students must be taking courses in natural resources, soils, plants, animal science, agriculture or forestry. You must be at least a college sophomore to apply. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit, curriculum of study, quality of the written essay, and career goals that are consistent with the mission of the Bedford County Conservation District. The deadline for the William Plank Memorial Scholarship is June 30. The deadline for the Glen Beach Memorial Scholarship is May 31. Bedford County Conservation District The Bedford Chapter #1245 Women of the Moose Scholarship - The Bedford Chapter #1245 Women of the Moose has a $500 scholarship available to a Bedford County woman. The deadline for this scholarship is May 1. For more information on this scholarship, or to request an application, please write to the address below. Scholarship Committee Military Education Scholarship Program - The VA Mortgage Center.com sponsors an essay contest where the prize is a $1,500 scholarship. Students must be current ROTC Program participants, active-duty military with the intentions to attend college, honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Military, or the sons and daughters of Veterans or Active-duty military. Essays must be submitted between October 1st and November 14th. Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund - The Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund provides scholarships to full-time, undergraduate students under the age of 24 who are the dependent son or daughter of a U.S. service member who, as the result of an operational mission or training accident has become permanently disabled (100% VA disability rating), was killed in action, or is classified as a POW or MIA. MAC-IECA Scholarship - The Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students who are enrolled in 4 year colleges or universities considering a career in erosion and sediment control or a related field. The fields include, but are not limited to Biology, Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Geology, Forestry, Agricultural Science, and Environmental Education. MD Forestry Board Scholarships- The MD Forestry Board Foundation provides scholarships to students who are 2nd semester freshman, sophomores, juniors, or seniors residing in MD, PA, VA or WV, who are majoring in forestry or a related field. The student must show an interest in forestry conservation and have at least a 2.0 GPA. Students may be full or part-time. Scholarships are given in the amount of $500. Gemvara Scholarship- The Gemvara Scholarship provides two $1,250 scholarships to students who are enrolled in an accredited American college or university. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible and the winners are selected based the quality of their required essay. The scholarship deadline is December 15, 2011. Rowe International Emergency Assistance Loans - Rowe Emergency Assistance Awards are available to support the special needs of international students entering the U.S. for study at FSU. Awards may be based on demonstrated financial need, and are available for full-time undergraduate and graduate international students accepted to FSU. The Support a Student Scholarship for Single Parents - The LaLitta Nash McKaig Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist single parents with the cost of living during college. To qualify, a student must be attending an accredited post-secondary institution online or taking courses with an online component, be a single parent, and be receiving some other type of financial aid. One $10,000 scholarship will be awarded after January 1st. Only the first 100 applications will be considered and you may begin to apply after October 1. New Page Scholarship - For students who have at least one parent employed by New Page, formerly Mead/Westvaco. Conroy Scholarship - The Conroy Scholarship is available to Maryland residents attending a Maryland School. It is available to veterans who are disabled 25% or more and have exhausted their veterans benefits; sons and daughters of persons killed or 100% disabled as a result of military service; sons, daughters or spouses of persons killed or 100% disabled as a result of employment as a state or local public safety employee; sons, daughters, or surviving spouses of someone killed during the 911 attacks; persons declared MIA or a POW during the Vietnam War, or sons and daughters of such persons. The deadline for this scholarship is July 15th and applications should be turned into the Financial Aid Office at FSU. The award amount varies, depending on the amount on your cost of attendance and other financial aid resources. State Work-Study Jobs - For
those students not eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program, there
are a limited number of jobs on campus available in every academic,
administrative, and auxiliary area. The Financial Aid Office receives
information concerning these job openings once per year, at the start
of every fall semester. Interested students should contact our office
during the first week of school in the fall semester if they are seeking
information on open state work-study positions.
Veterans’ Benefits - Any questions regarding veterans’ benefits should be addressed to the Veterans Administration Office, Student Services Building, Frostburg, MD 21532-1099. You may contact the Veterans Administration Office by calling (301) Vocational Rehabilitation - If you are disabled, you may be eligible for vocational rehabilitation benefits. Contact your local Vocational Rehabilitation Office for information and applications. Graduate Assistantships - Graduate students are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships. Assistantships at FSU are worth a stipend of $5,000 for the academic year and waiver of tuition. A graduate assistant is required to work 20 hours per week. Graduate assistants engage in research studies, projects, teaching, or other activities that are directly related to their programs of study.
