A STAR! Service Sites

A STAR in Western Maryland programA STAR! (Appalachian Service Through Action and Resources) in Western Maryland is part of the AmeriCorps Alliance for National Service.  

A STAR! provides direct, substantive service programs that improve the literacy of school children, enhance the health care and living conditions of children and elderly people, help at-risk youth by offering after-school programs, improve shelter and support services for low-income families and preserve the environment for the Western Maryland communities.  

The A STAR! program is managed through a partnership with Frostburg State University located in Frostburg, Maryland, the Maryland Governor's Office of Service and Volunteerism, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. A STAR! AmeriCorps Members serve within the rural counties of Allegany, Garrett and Washington to help citizens improve the conditions of their own lives. A STAR! resources help Western Maryland residents design and implement innovative solutions to their communities’ problems.

There are several agencies in Western Maryland participating in A STAR! which sponsor AmeriCorps positions. The following is a list of agencies, names of site supervisors, and a brief description of the service objectives for members placed at that site. Allegany College of Maryland

Two (2) AmeriCorps members serve as tutors for students enrolled in science/math courses proven to have high failure/withdraw rates. Individuals with background in math and/ or the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Appalachian Crossroads

One (1) AmeriCorps member provides support to individuals with developmental and physical disabilities to enable them to work at jobs both in the community and in a sheltered setting.

Beginnings Pre-school and Kindergarten

One (1) AmeriCorps member will serve as a teacher's aid to preschoolers within the Montessori school.

Cumberland Community Outreach Center

One (1) AmeriCorps member serves closely with the YMCA's Gilcrest Center and local neighborhood associations to create and sustain community based programs in economically challenged neighborhoods.

Department of Juvenile Justice Youth Centers

Two (2) AmeriCorps members serve as tutors for adjudicated youth. One member serves as an environmental science tutor, another as a reading/math tutor.

The Dove Center

One (1) AmeriCorps member will be responsible for providing direct service to individuals facing domestic and sexual violence issues. The agency provides a variety of services to adults and children of domestic and sexual violence.

Frostburg Community Center

One (1) AmeriCorps member assists with the creation, planning, and implementation of community programs at the Center.

FSU/Read to Succeed Program

One (1) AmeriCorps member recruits, trains and retains Frostburg State University student volunteers to support and expand various countywide literacy programs, under the auspices of the READ TO SUCCEED Program based at FSU.

One (1) AmeriCorps member will design and facilitate volunteer and service-learning opportunities for the Allen HallSTARS! and other, Frostburg State University faculty, staff, and students, as well as members of the community at large.

Garrett Community College

One (1) AmeriCorps Member will assist the GCC Alternative Agriculture Center with promoting sustainable agriculture in Western Maryland through various activities and workshops.

Garrett County Community Action Committee

One (1) AmeriCorps members serve to meet the unmet human needs of Garrett County residents in the following areas: assisting families with energy assistance and other services related to human needs.

Garrett County Health Department

Three (3) AmeriCorps members will provide services in the following health-related areas: community health (teen theater and car seat safety), Healthy Families, and dental health.

Hagerstown Community College/The Children’s Learning Center

Two (2) AmeriCorps members will provide direct services to pre-school age and kindergarten children and will offer individual support to children with disabilities.

Hancock Middle/Senior High School

One (1) AmeriCorps member will be directly serving middle and high school students in tutoring and mentoring activities during and after school.

Human Resources Development Council

Two (2) AmeriCorps members will be directly serving disabled adults in an adult day care through individualized human interaction activities.

Local Management Board/Office of Children, Youth and Families

One (1) AmeriCorps members will directly serve youth through early intervention projects such as a juvenile review board.

Transitional Aged Youth

One (1) AmeriCorps member will assist at-risk, older adolescents and young adults to encourage personal, emotional and financial responsibility.

Western Heights Middle School

One (1) AmeriCorps member will provide alternative placement for at-risk youth in a public school setting.

Western Maryland Area Health Education Center

One (1) AmeriCorps member will implement health activities for middle school students to inspire interest and raise awareness regarding the health profession. Member also facilitates a summer program further encouraging youth to pursue health careers.

Western Maryland Food Bank

One (1) AmeriCorps member will assist with the distribution and coordination of efforts to increase use of the food bank services. The member is also responsible for outreaching to charitable non-profit agencies to increase membership and monitoring of these agencies.

Western Maryland PRYDE

Two (2) AmeriCorps members assist social workers to provide foster care services to local youth experiencing unsuccessful placements in out of home settings. Member also assists with training and intervention with parents.

Western Maryland Special Olympics

One (1) AmeriCorps member directly serves persons with developmental and physical disabilities to participate in regional sports/recreational program.

Cumberland YMCA
