2021 Faculty Achievement Awards

Each year, Faculty Achievement Awards are presented to individual faculty in each of three categories: teaching, academic accomplishment and University/community service. The awards represent peer recognition of outstanding performance in each of the award categories. The award winners receive individual plaques and cash awards of $1000 provided by the FSU Foundation. The names of the award winners are placed on a plaque in the Hitchins Building.

Teaching:

Dr. Ali Ashraf
Dr. Ali Ashraf

Associate Professor – Marketing and Finance Department
College of Business

Dr. Ali Ashraf is recognized for his excellence in teaching and his dedication to student success. During his eight years at Frostburg, Ashraf has taught courses in all modalities, from in-person to online, always enriching instruction with experiential activities and exercises. He serves students in the Department of Marketing and Finance on the main campus in Frostburg and with our educational partner campus, Hunan University of Technology and Business (HUTB) in Changsha, China. Students praise him for his sincerity, knowledge, and unique ability to create a safe, positive learning environment while maintaining high expectations and passion for the field.

Molly S. Hartzog
Dr. Molly S. Hartzog

Assistant Professor – English and Foreign Languages Department
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Dr. Molly Hartzog is being recognized for excellence in teaching. Since her arrival at FSU, she has implemented innovative, high-impact, collaborative assignments in her professional writing courses in the Department of English and Foreign Languages and Literature. Dr. Hartzog’s courses serve students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and are rated as highly effective and engaging. Her creative pedagogy, grounded in experiential and student-centered practices, demonstrates her commitment to student success and career preparation. Dr. Hartzog is also a member of the University’s Excellence in Academic Advising Taskforce, where she advocates for the holistic approach that she takes to advising students.


Academic Achievement:

Dr. Justin Dunmyre
Dr. Justin Dunmyre

Associate Professor – Mathematics Department
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Dr. Justin Dunmyre is recognized for his outstanding academic achievement. Dunmyre is the chair of the Department of Mathematics and has focused his research on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). This research has led him to have work published in PRIMUS, a journal that focuses on the teaching of undergraduate mathematics. Based on this work, Dunmyre and his co-authors were first invited to present an hour-long workshop on their paper and then based on the feedback, he was invited by the Mathematics Association of America to present this work as part of a webinar series on assessment. He has also been asked to present on his teaching to new mathematics PhD students at a national teaching development program (Project NExT). An extremely impressive aspect of his work has been his merging of mathematics with so many additional fields of study resulting in a reduction of silos across discipline.

Dr. Evan Offstein
Dr. Evan H. Offstein

Professor – Management Department
College of Business

Dr. Evan Offstein is being recognized for his outstanding academic achievement. He has been a prolific publisher in his three primary areas of research which consist of 1) ethical/honorable leadership along with moral reasoning and judgement, 2) instructional design and techniques, pedagogy, and elements related to management learning, and 3) executive coaching and its functionality. Even more impressive than the quantity of his publications has been the extremely high quality of his work. He has multiple publications in the most elite journals in the field of management, has won three “Best Paper” awards in the past six years, and has been recently honored by receiving the highly prestigious “Best Field Report Paper” at the 2020 Academy of Management Annual Conference in the Management Consulting Division. Indeed, in the words of his Department Chair “His work brings much praise and esteem to FSU, in general, and to our AACSB accredited College, in particular.”

University and Community Service:

Dr. Michael B. Flinn
Dr. Michael B. Flinn

Professor – Computer Science and Information Technologies Department
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Dr. Michael Flinn is recognized for his outstanding and extensive service to FSU, the community, and his profession. Dr. Flinn is the Chair of the Department of Computer Science & Information Technologies and has served the University and the community through different endeavors. As he put it, over his career at FSU, he has never stopped being passionate about education. He has accomplished that through his service under different roles in institutional governance as a faculty senator for many years, serving as Chair of the Institutional Priority and Resources (IPR) committee for three years, chairing the Graduate Council Committee for two years, and being a member of Excellence in Academic Advising (EAA) since its inception in which he serves as a co-chair on the steering committee for technology in advising. Flinn’s services go beyond the institution to connect the community to the University through many service activities and projects such as Allegany County’s P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) efforts for Allegany County Public Schools, 4H Tech Club, and working with MCCE (Maryland Consortium for Computation Education) to develop a bigger pipeline to place more Computing Educators in the K12 space in Maryland, and he is instrumental in the development of the Capital CoLab project, which promotes partnerships between employers and universities in our region. In sum, Dr. Flinn has demonstrated servant leadership in a myriad of ways, and as one of his colleagues described him, “he is your ‘go to’ guy as you can count on him to be there and to get the job done!

Dr. Lei “Lilly” Ye

Associate Professor – Marketing and Finance Department
College of Business

Dr. Lei “Lilly” Ye is recognized for outstanding, tireless service that has made a difference locally, nationally and internationally. A longtime member of the Faculty Promotion and Tenure subcommittee, she advocates for faculty colleagues across all disciplines and works passionately to curtail campus bullying; in her words, “A fair and respectful working environment is what we all ask for.” Countless students have benefited from her work as Marketing Club advisor, leading field trips to Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore and fielding a team that won awards in New York City competition against Yale and NYU. As coordinator of our university’s partnership with Hunan University of Technology and Business, she was pivotal to Hunan’s Middle States accreditation. She is not only a frequent flier to China but puts in many late hours at home working with colleagues who live 13 time zones away. As incoming vice president of the Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators, she was an organizer of the group’s historic virtual conference in March 2021. Dr. Ye lives the credo she expresses in her self-statement: “One’s value lies in serving others well.”
