How do I upload media (video or audio files) into Blackboard using Kaltura?

  • Every Blackboard user (students and faculty) has their own media space on the Kaltura media server, called My Media.  This is where their content is stored and can be managed.

  • Students can upload video and audio files and then embed the links within assignments, in discussions, blogs, wikis, etc.  The instructor can also make their uploaded videos or audio files available to other students in the Course Gallery (the Course Gallery is located in the Course Tools menu) if that is how the instructor wishes student media content be shared.

Upload Kaltura Media into an Assignment submission, Discussion, Blog, Wiki, etc.

  1. Navigate to the assignment, discussion, blog, wiki, etc, within the Blackboard course.
  2. From the Text Box Editor, click the small Mashup button on the toolbar and select the Kaltura Media dropdown. *NOTE: Do not delete the video from the My Media area or the instructor will be unable to access the video.*

  3. The student can either select the media that they had previously uploaded in the My Media repository, or they can upload (or do a screen recording) to add new media. *NOTE: Only media uploaded via the Assignment submission will be private.  All other ways will be public for other students.*

  4. Submit the Mashup item selected.

  5. The embedded media displays in the content editor.

NOTES on media uploads:

  • Maximum file upload size is 1.5GB

Upload Kaltura Media into the Course Gallery

  • Students can add media to the Course Gallery (if the instructor has made the Course Gallery available to students).  Please note that the instructor will then need to make student media public.

If you choose to upload media or record from webcam:

  • Choose the correct tab for the type of media you wish to upload (1.5GB max file size).  Then select to upload something new, browse your existing content (My Content) or record from your webcam.

  • The Upload media or record from webcam will provide the following options.
    • Upload a new video, audio, or photo file
    • Record from a webcam
  • The Record your screen will launch a Java applet that will enable you to do a quick screen recording of your computer screen, and it can then be uploaded immediately.
