Civet Cat

Viverra civettacivet

Average size: 3.5-4.5 lbs

                        17-28” long

Average lifespan: ~12  years

Range/distribution Map

Habitat description:

Can be found in the tropical, deciduous forests and lowland rainforests.  The civet will spend most of the day, and night, up in the trees.

The civet is usually a solitary animal, but may congregate if food is abundant.  The cat is most active at night when it hunts birds, lizards, rats and mice.

Conservation Status:

Though deforestation threatens this cat, it seems to be plentiful in its range.

Fun Fact:

The civet uses musk for marking its territory and in mating.  Humans use this musk in many expensive perfumes.
