Author and FSU Faculty Member Andy Duncan Receives State Arts Council Award

Andy Duncan, an associate professor in Frostburg State University’s Department of English and Foreign Languages, has been named a recipient of a $1,000 Individual Artist Award in the fiction category from the Maryland State Arts Council. The awards recognize the exceptional artistic achievements of talented artists from across the state.

Duncan, of Frostburg, is the sole recipient in this year’s awarded categories living in Maryland’s three westernmost counties. He and the other recipients will be honored with a reception at the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore on June 27.

Selected by an out-of-state jury solely on the basis of artistic merit, fewer than 100 Maryland artists were chosen from a pool of nearly 600 applicants.

Duncan’s writing has been recognized in the past with three World Fantasy Awards in the fiction-writing category, a Nebula Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for best novelette, the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and multiple nominations for Hugo Awards.

The Maryland State Arts Council is an agency of the Maryland Department of Commerce. The council recognizes that artists are at the core of thriving communities and that they contribute significantly to the overall vitality of the state. For information, visit
