Baseball Advances to AMCC Tournament Final Four

FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State advanced to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament final four with a sweep of Pitt-Greensburg, 4-3 (8 inn.) & 13-8, Saturday in the opening round.

Third-seeded FSU is now 27-13 on the season while sixth-seeded UPG ends its season at 16-19. The AMCC Tournament final four will be hosted by La Roche May 11-13.

With game one tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Frostburg State junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) got thigs going with a single through the left side. He advanced to third when classmate Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) singled to center, and after an interntional walk, junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) delivered the game-winning single that scored Mitchell.

Freshman starter Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) threw a complete game to earn his eighth win of the season (8-2). He struckout three, allowed 10 hits and three runs.

The hosts scored a single run in the third, fourth and sixth innings while Pitt-Greensburg scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

In the third, senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) led off the inning with a single and later scored when senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) singled to left. In the fourth, freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) led off with a walk and later scored on a Burke single.

After Pitt-Greensburg took a 3-2 edge in the top of the sixth, sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) evened the score when he crossed the plate on a balk.

Game two proved to be different for both teams as FSU used an eight-run third to blow open a 3-2 lead on its way to capturing the victory. Gitzen powered the outburst with a grand slam and now leads FSU with nine homers on the season.

Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) earned his seventh win of the season (7-1) after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on 11 hits.

FSU grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Webb drove home a pair of runs on a double to right center and Derr capped the inning with an RBI single that scored Webb.

UPG narrowed the contest to 3-2 with back-to-back RBIs in the top of the third, but Frostburg State exploded for eight in the home half of the inning. Gitzen’s grand slam along with a Mitchell two-run single and a senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) RBI single accented the scoring.

Pitt-Greensburg again cut into a FSU lead, this time with four runs in the top of fourth, but Frostburg State answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. UPG later closed the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
