Baseball Beats Medaille In AMCC Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team opened its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with a 5-1 defeat of Medaille Saturday afternoon on a cold, damp Bobcat Field. Game two of the originally scheduled double-header was postponed due to poor weather.

FSU (8-8, 1-0 AMCC) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) tripled to right center scoring freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford). Wilt later scored on a sophomore Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Medaille (2-7-1, 0-1 AMCC) cut the Bobcat lead to one when Dan Rokitka walked and later scored on a Kellen Owen base hit to center field.

Junior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) led off the Frostburg State fifth inning with a base knock and later stole second. Sophomore Todd Holmes (Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) then singled to right field scoring Mahan to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Bobcats put the game away in the sixth inning, adding two more runs to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Lance Williams (Herndon, Va./W.T. Woodson) scored the first run of the inning on a sophomore Arthur Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) single. The next batter, Mahan, scored sophomore Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) on a sacrifice bunt.

In the seventh, Medaille’s Jeremy Callahan tried to start a two-out rally with a double to right field. The next batter, Tom Wasielewski, advanced Callahan to third base with a single. However, junior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) struckout the next batter to end the game.

Hollister pitched the complete game allowing one run on six hits while striking out eight in earning the win. Maverick starter Kevin Maluchnik threw 5.1 innings giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out nine while taking the loss.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they travel to Mt. Aloysius at 1:00 pm.
