Baseball Blows Lead in Loss to Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, PA - The Frostburg State baseball team failed to protect a 8-0 lead through six innings as they fell 9-8 at Waynesburg College on Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats received a great pitching performance from freshman Frank Sutton (Robert C. Byrd/Clarksburg, W.Va.) and offensive support from senior Eric Edelman (Sherwood/Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Chris Baugher (Brunswick/Frederick, Md.).

The Bobcats (19-15) collected a huge seven-run inning led by Edelman’s first homerun of the season, a three-run shot to rightcenter and then a two-run shot by Baugher, his third of the season, finished the scoring in the fourth for FSU.

Frostburg State added another run in the fifth off of the Hornets (10-13) on an RBI fielders-choice by freshman Chris Jones (Towson High/Baltimore, Md.).

On the mound, Sutton was cruising as he went the first five innings allowing no runs on only six hits. However, in the sixth he allowed three two-out unearned runs as the Hornets began to chip away at the lead.

In the seventh Waynesburg tied the game with five more runs as they combined to score three off of senior Rob DeSanto (Wheaton/Rockville, Md.) and two more off of senior Brent Lutz (Central/Toms Brook, Va.) before senior Chris McGarvey (Glendale/Fallentimber, Pa.) closed out the inning. In the bottom half of the eighth, McGarvey struck out the first two batters but then a two-out walk and a seeing eye single ended the afternoon for McGarvey who was charge for his third loss of the season.

Replacing McGarvey, sophomore Collin Bednar (Glen Burnie/Millersville, Md.) walked the first batter he saw to load the bases and then a passed ball allowed the winning run to cross the plate before Bednar could strike out the final Hornet batter.

In the eighth and ninth innings the Bobcats had a chance to reclaim the lead and escape with a victory as each inning was led off with a double, but FSU failed to bring a runner home.

On the afternoon, the Bobcats were led by Edelman, who was 2-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Also performing well were senior’s Kevin Romanik (Millville/Millville, N.J.), who went 2-4 with a run and an RBI, and Ryan Hamerski (Sherwood/Olney, Md.), who went 3-5 including two doubles and a run scored.

The Bobcats will return to action this weekend, beginning Friday, April 23 against Pitt-Greensburg in an important Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader, followed by another AMCC match-up on Saturday at Lake Erie College. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
