Baseball Defeats Catholic, 12-6, in Non-Conference Showdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead Frostburg State past Catholic, 12-6, Saturday afternoon at Talbot Field.

FSU is now 22-11 on the season while CUA’s season ends with a 17-22-1 slate.

Sophomores Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) each recorded RBIs in the first inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats added to that lead in the third when Jones singled home sophomore Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

After CUA narrowed the game to 3-1 in the bottom of the second, Frostburg State exploded for five runs in the fourth. Jones, Barone and senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) each recorded RBI singles. Jones also scored a run during the inning while sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals added one run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 8-2.

In the seventh, junior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) hit a two-run homerun, classmate Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) added a solo homer and Jones knocked in his final run of the game as the Bobcats extended their lead to 12-2.

CUA scored two runs in the home half of the seventh and one in both the eighth and ninth innings to close out the scoring.

Junior Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) improved his record to 4-0 on the season. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out two. Peter Doyle suffered the loss for the Cards lasting just 3.1 innings giving up eight runs (four earned) on eighth hits.

Barone chipped in a fine performance for the Bobcats going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double.
